Broadchurch: a Binge-Worthy Treat
To prepare myself for the new series of Doctor Who, I decided to give Broadchurch a try. The series was created by Chris Chibnall (who will be taking over as the Doctor Who showrunner from Steven Moffet for series 11,) and starred the new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.
The series ran from 2013 til 2017 and aired on the ITV Network. It tells the story of a small coastal town in Dorset that is torn asunder by the mysterious death of an 11 year old boy, Danny Latimer. Jodie Whittaker played Danny's mum, Beth. David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor,) stars as Alex Hardy, the DI called in to investigate the boy's murder. Olivia Colman assists him as Ellie Miller, a local DS. Over the eight episodes of the first series, the townfolks' dirty laundry is deliciously aired and it isn't until the final episode that the killer's identity was revealed. What a shocker that was!
The second series follows the trial of Danny's killer -- who pleads Not Guilty -- as well as the reopening of the Sandbrook case (Hardy's last big case before coming to Broadchurch.)
The third and final series sees Hardy and Miller investigating the rape of a local woman.
I tend to have a love/hate relationship with cop dramas; I loved The Fall and The Closer, but could never get into any incarnation of Law & Order. Thankfully, Broadchurch unfolds more like an Agatha Christie murder-mystery than a procedural cop drama. It kept me guessing til the very end of each mystery. I breezed through a series a day. That's 24 episodes in three days.
Fans of Doctor Who will appreciate the plethora of cameos from the show's actors: David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Arthur Darvill, Eve Myles, and David Bradley just to name a few.
The acting was phenomal across the board, but the performance that really stood out for me was Jodie Whittaker as the grieving mother. In the first episode when Beth ran in on the discovery of Danny's body, I felt her pain. Every gasp and tear was so realistic. She is one of the best actresses that I have ever seen.
I highly recommend this series to literally anyone. If you don't like it, you're not human! Go check it out on Netflix, now!!
